About This Game
Quick Overview
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactical strategy game where you lead Earth’s defense against an alien invasion. You manage the XCOM base, research alien technology, build facilities, launch interceptors, and send small squads into dangerous missions where every move can decide who survives.
What makes it special is the pressure. Your soldiers are not disposable units — they gain ranks, earn abilities, and can die permanently. One missed shot, one bad flank, or one risky dash can ruin a mission. That mix of squad tactics, base management, panic control, and permanent consequences is what made Enemy Unknown the foundation for modern XCOM.
Who Should Play This Game?
Play XCOM: Enemy Unknown if you enjoy tactical combat, turn-based strategy, squad upgrades, base building, and tense decision-making. It is a great starting point if you want to understand the modern XCOM formula before moving to XCOM 2 or War of the Chosen.
This is not for players who want fast shooting or real-time action. Enemy Unknown is about patience, cover, positioning, overwatch, research choices, and accepting that sometimes your best soldier will miss a 90% shot. If you like games where victory feels earned and mistakes create memorable stories, this is still worth playing.
Performance on PC
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is very easy to run on modern PCs. Steam lists Windows Vista, a 2 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT / ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, DirectX 9, and 20 GB storage as minimum requirements. Recommended specs are still light, with Windows 7, 4 GB RAM, and GeForce 9000 series / Radeon HD 3000 series graphics.
Most laptops and older desktops should handle it well. Since it is turn-based, ultra-high FPS is not important, but smoother performance helps with camera movement, explosions, alien turns, and longer sessions. Modern systems should have no issue running it, especially compared to the heavier XCOM 2 games.
