If you like gathering resources, designing bases, upgrading vehicles, and slowly unlocking access to previously unreachable areas, there is a lot to enjoy here.

It is also surprisingly effective as a horror game without technically being one. The game does not constantly throw enemies at you, but swimming into dark, unexplored water while hearing something enormous nearby can create more tension than many dedicated horror titles.

Players who prefer constant combat may find the experience slower than expected, since avoiding dangerous creatures is usually more important than fighting them. Subnautica works best if you enjoy curiosity-driven games where you are comfortable exploring without always knowing exactly what you will find next.

Subnautica is not particularly demanding by modern PC standards, making it playable on a wide range of hardware. Older gaming PCs can generally handle the game at reduced settings, while newer mid-range systems should have little trouble running it at high settings and higher resolutions.

The game can still experience occasional frame-rate drops when entering large bases, heavily populated areas, or when the world is loading while travelling quickly in a vehicle. Extremely large player-built bases can also place additional strain on performance.

An SSD is highly recommended because Subnautica constantly streams terrain and environmental objects while you move through the world. On modern hardware, the overall experience is smooth, although occasional object pop-in and minor loading stutters can still appear due to the way the game’s large open environment is constructed.
