About This Game

Quick Overview
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl, adding a substantial new storyline that pushes Skif deeper into the Zone. The story focuses heavily on the long-running conflict between Duty and Freedom, two factions with completely different ideas about what the Zone represents. Skif is pulled between those beliefs while searching for answers about what lies at the heavily restricted center of the Zone.

The expansion introduces two new regions, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest, along with new and returning characters, additional quests, and more areas to explore. GSC Game World says the new storyline can take dozens of hours to complete, making Cost of Hope much larger than a small side-content DLC. It can also be accessed through an existing campaign or by using dedicated DLC start options from the main menu.

Who Should Play This Game?
Cost of Hope is primarily for players who already enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s combination of open-world exploration, survival mechanics, dangerous firefights, anomalies, mutants, and story choices. It is especially worthwhile if you are interested in the history of Duty and Freedom, because their opposing philosophies are central to the expansion rather than being pushed into the background.

You should also consider it if you finished Heart of Chornobyl and simply want another reason to return to the Zone with new locations and a major storyline. New players can jump ahead to the DLC using built-in shortcuts, but experiencing at least part of the main campaign first will give more context to its world, factions, and characters. Keep in mind that Cost of Hope requires the base S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl game.

Performance on PC
Cost of Hope uses the base game’s demanding PC foundation. The minimum requirements list an Intel Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 1600X, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 6 GB, RX 580 8 GB, or Intel Arc A750. That configuration targets roughly 1080p at 30 FPS using the Low preset and upscaling technology, while an SSD is required.

For approximately 1440p at 60 FPS on High settings, the recommended hardware rises to an Intel Core i7-11700 or Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB of RAM, and an RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 4070, or RX 6800 XT. The game requires around 160 GB of storage, so both GPU power and available SSD space are important considerations. Players should also be cautious with older mods after installing Cost of Hope and Update 2.0, as GSC Game World warns that outdated mods can cause instability and performance problems.
